Sweers Hidden Reef...

This is Margaret's first Gulf Reef painting. So many people say there is nothing in the Gulf but mangroves and crocodiles, but we know that is not true...and so does Margaret... and with the recent discovery of Coral Reefs in the Gulf, plus lyn's underwater observations, here is Margaret's painting depicting the typical fish on the surface, but as you go deeper you see the Coral Spawn, and deeper again, it is darker, the water more murky, yet hidden in those depths are assorted variety of seagrasses, sponges, corals and fishes that the surface fisherperson never sees... the Hidden Reef of Sweers...

We first met Margaret when she stayed here while teaching a TAFE course on nearby Bentinck Island in 2004. During her spare time, she painted. Her paintings are stunning. There is incredible detail and balance in her work. We commissioned her to paint a special painting for each of our guest cabins - all with a local flavour/story to tell. Margaret is from the Gulf town of Normanton. She has been painting for many years and has won several major art awards. Her work is on display in Parliament House, Sydney Airport, even overseas in Germany and the Netherlands.

Her painting style is a mix of modern and traditional with her own unique flair for capturing the essence of the landscape or animal that she is portraying. Margaret's inspiration comes from her mother and aunt, and from her beloved children and grandchildren.
