Many of our guests are pilots and have expressed an interest in setting up a section which features the unusual or interesting aircraft that occasionally visit Sweers Island. Your feedback & suggestions are welcome, and if you see your aircraft here and can supply further details/technical info. please email us at the address below. Below are some photos of interesting ROTARY WING aircraft (= HELICOPTERS!) that have visited Sweers. NEW! Click here if you'd like to take a "Virtual Flight" around Sweers Island...

In early May 2008, we were fortunate to host the return leg of the SIDS safari to the red centre - where 40 helicopters met to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of civilian helicopters in formation at one time, and raised a lot of money and awareness for SIDS = Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. That all took place in Birdsville and Uluru, then the participants went their separate ways, with some of the safari organisers opting for a northern detour and so Sweers Island had the most helicopters ever here at one time - SEVEN - all parked out the front of the cabins - it was quite a sight! There were 6 Robinson R44s and 1 Eurocopter EC120. The visit was organised by Helibiz - who have a base near Shute Harbour/Airlie Beach, and Jeffrey Ruddell who owns and operates Whitsunday Airport, and is the man behind the magnificent new Whitsunday Aviation Village Estate (WAVE) development www.whitsundayairport.com.au
This sequence of photos shows them arriving, as they lined up neatly in front of the guests cabins...

The group arrived the day before Sweers Island Resort's 20th birthday, so we celebrated early, flying the Australian flag so that they would see the flagpole! and also to show them wind direction for landing. The Dutch flag was flying because Sweers was named after a Dutchman, Salomon Sweers, who was a member of the Dutch East Indies Company - you can read more about him if you click HERE.
Last year we had a visit from Murray Moules (and he's due again soon, so hopefully more pix will follow!) Here is Murray Moule's stunning Eurocopter EC-120...
And after 12 months, that chopper is still the most impressive one we have seen on Sweers - Murray has owned his EC-120 for 4 years now, and when we asked him how he managed to keep it looking so nice and shiny, he replied "with a lot of hard work!" Here he is with his pride and joy...click on the thumbnails for a full size photo...
This page is a 'Work in Progress' and Tex will make sure that Lyn gets some more photos up here soon, so - Watch This Space!!!
