It's that time of year again! When the Burdekin Boys head for the Gulf and Cyclone Rodney (Prescott) breezes in to check out what is new on Sweers. This year he has been upgraded from the Hilton to the Ritz....and he has given the new cabin his seal of approval... The weather has been absolutely GLORIOUS these past few weeks, with light northerlies in the middle of the day. The water is very dirty for this time of year, but the fish are jumping into the boats and the Spanish Mackerel are early... Here's the Burdekin Boys' Catch Of The Day...
That's Terry Stone, of Bowen, with his 31lb Spanish Mackerel. Terry was fishing the bottom and had a set line out floating, with a fresh Sweetlip on it when this monster came along and took the bait...He fought it for 15-20 minutes before landing his prize. Well done, Terry!
And here's Darrell Hinschen of Cannonvale Marine with a couple of lovely Fingermark Bream, and Terry again, with a Big Jewfish and a nice Coral Trout. These guys are here for a couple more days yet, and have been fishing Sweers for years, they know the area and they know their stuff, so Watch This Space..... And they've done it again...here is Rodney with a lovely 10lb Coral Trout caught by Terry,
and while the Boys were out in the boat, Darrell strolled down to the beach to see if our stories of Barramundi were true - he returned with his prize, much to Rod's envy! This is the first time the Burdekin Boys have targeted Barra while on Sweers, and true to form, they came up with the goods...
Darrell Hinschen with his 68cm Barramundi.
Later on, the crew celebrated with some good old local Gulf Mudcrabs...
They're here! The first Spanish Mackerel of the season has been landed (there were a few near-misses last week) - and it was a beauty, caught by long-time visitor Frank Demartini from Brisbane.
The smile says it all!
The fish weighed in at around 40lb. Well done, Frank!
Frank has been visiting Sweers for many years and this year he brought some mates who had heard all the fishing stories...Were they true? Were they impressed...? Well, the fish started off small...
...and bigger...
Well done, guys!
