MACK ATTACK!

They're here - the Spanish Mackerel are out in force in the Gulf with numerous hook-ups and some fine catches. Check out the following photos!

That's Peter and Warwick who travelled all the way from New Zealand just to catch fish on Sweers Island - and what a day they had - with a magnificent Northern Longtail Tuna and a Spanish Mackerel. Well done, guys! Don't tell your friends or they'll all be over here! (for a "fush!")

That's Chris with his first ever Mackerel - a 25lb monster!          That's Ross Andrews from Swan Hill (Murray Downs

Chris came all the way from Melbourne with Rich River              Fishing Club) and his magnificent 40lb Spanish

Aviation veteran pilot Owen Nelson (pictured with young            Mackerel - the biggest fish caught this year -

Jack) - Rich River Aviation based in Elmore, Victoria, fly              so far!

some very successful groups of fishermen to Sweers

Island every year. Scroll down for last year's photos...

That's Phillip Black from Geelong with his first ever Spanish            And that's Our Mick with his brand new

Mackerel - Phillip was in Geelong this morning, arrived on              fishing rod - a Wilson Texallium utilising the flash

the island at 2pm and by 6pm he had hooked this magnificent       new "live fibre" technology. Mick caught this nice

22lb Spaniard. Phil caught his Mack on a single hook with               big Queenfish off the beach.

garfish for bait and a nylon trace! How lucky is that! Phil is

an orthodontist and he says that the fish's front teeth did

not really engage -

he reckons the sharp hook and Seaweed Teaser did the trick.

And now for something completely different - guests tonight (Saturday 4th June) were treated to a rare sight - you normally have to pay big bucks to watch this sort of thing on the Discovery Channel, but it is all happening here on Sweers - a couple of Children's Pythons decided it was the ideal honeymoon spot for them and guests were privileged to witness their courtship display - which was really graceful. Eventually the male (we think) disappeared into the beer fridge and his sweetheart gave up and headed back to their hidey hole...typical!

Power Fishing!

Steve Power, from Mittagong, NSW, had his crew of regulars up for their annual FishFest and they seemed to enjoy themselves, whether fishing or socialising or from the photos they sent us of their further adventures, sailing in the Whitsundays - we think they would have a good time wherever they went! Here they are with a couple of the fish they caught at Sweers and also a shot they sent us from the Whitsundays just to make us jealous...

the barra are still here...

Guy Aloi from Melbourne caught this beauty off the beach this morning (Thursday May 19th)     - 750mm long and weighing 4 kilos - he caught it with a Nilsmaster bleeding mullet lure off the rocks at Barra Bay...

MACK ATTACK!

"Team Cool Drink" are visiting Sweers this year on their annual fishing holiday - the guys hail from Victoria and SA and have had a ball during their week on the island. Simon and Jeff caught a couple of huge Spanish Mackerel yesterday afternoon and here is Simon pictured with one of them. A 12 kg Mack caught on a Calcutta 400 with 20lb braid.

Simon Austerberry, from Adelaide.

That's Mark Nihills from Melbourne with the 68cm barramundi he caught off the beach this morning (Sunday 15th) - this time yesterday he was in Melbourne...Well done Mark!

Mark was using a Baitcaster with a Nilsmaster Lure and he caught his fish off the beach before brekky!

Friday the 13th...Black Friday?...here's the crew of Staff and Helpers for this winter on Sweers! Including Ella the Dog and Trim the Cat...of course

(Matthew  Flinders who was the first person to circumnavigate Australia, visited the Gulf in 1802 and named Sweers Island. Accompanying him was his faithful cat, Trim, the first cat on Sweers! (now we have 8 aluminium 'cats'...) and our good friends Jock & Sue Dyason presented us with this mascot replica of Trim. Jock & Sue are due here in a few days so watch this space as they are keen fishos having fished Sweers many times, plus other fantastic fishing spots all over the world, since Jock is a well known fishing writer/photographer. (Sue is the one who poses reluctantly for the photos and who catches most of the fish!)

Lyn, Ella, Harold, Mick (Trim the cat on his lap), Lee, Glenis, & Tex.

MOTHERS' DAY PRESENTS ON SWEERS!

Guys - this is what to give Mum on Mothers' Day...

Regular visitors Harold and Glenis Cislowski,  flew up here from Ayr in Harold's home-built 'Pelican' aircraft, and yesterday being Mothers' Day, Harold was scratching his head trying to figure out how to get chocolates or flowers...but he came up with a better one - Glenis loves her fishing so when she hooked this monster Fingermark Bream (Spotted Scale Sea Perch) - Harold landed it for her - the best Mothers' Day present anyone could ask for! Well done, Glenis!

Glenis Cislowski with her 12lb Fingermark caught on a handline.
