2004 PHOTOS

In the past, Sweers has hosted a couple of Japanese visitors but it is only recently that the first dedicated fishing guests visited the island, along with their Australian guide Yassu, from Fujimaru Fishing Tours www.fujimaru.com.au and their local fishing guide Jason Jesse from Karumba-based Gulf Sportfishing Adventures. www.gulfsportfishingadventures.com.au          Taka and Meg hail from near Tokyo and are keen fishers, having paid a visit to Bamaga, Cape York Peninsula, last year. Taka is involved in the Golfing Industry but his 'hobby' is manufacturing top quality fishing rods and they proved their worth on the Sweers Trip - check out these photos!...

That's Taka with one of his                                   And his wife Meg (pictured

                                                                             beautiful Barramundi...

Now is that a realistic lure, or what?!

That's Yassu with a magnificent Giant trevally which he returned to the Gulf waters -

so, yes, folks, it is still out there, waiting to be caught again, and again, and again...

It's Mackerel Season! And the Shellie family have travelled from Kyabram (Vic) and flown across to the island with Rich River Aviation.

It's the 3rd generation of the Shellie family to visit Sweers and here's young Ricky with his first big Spanish Mackerel.

And here are the Shellie boys with their Catch of the Day...

Wes, Ricky and Ben Shellie with a couple of fine Spaniards.

And the record this year is currently held by Mick Locke, of Ingleburn Hotel Fishing Club, Sydney. Mick caught not just one, but TWO huge Spaniards on Tuesday, June 15 2004. The fish on the scales weighed in at 10.5 Kg and the one he's holding weighed a whopping 24.5 Kg. That is just a few kilos off the Sweers all-time record! So guess what Mick will be doing tomorrow afternoon....looking for Big Brother! Well done Mick.

And  Kareena Hilet, on a spur-of-the-moment visit from Mount Isa with her family, caught this magnificent Spanish Mackerel estimated at about 30lbs - the first of the season and unusually early for a spaniard. She caught it on her rod and took quite a while to reel it in!
